GPU Accelerated Long-Term Simulations of Beam-Beam Effects in Colliders

چکیده
We present an update on the development of the new code for long-term simulation of beam-beam effects in particle colliders. The underlying physical model relies on a matrix-based arbitrary-order particle tracking (including a symplectic option) for beam transport and the generalized Bassetti-Erskine approximation for beam-beam interaction. The computations are accelerated through a parallel implementation on a hybrid GPU/CPU platform. With the new code, previously computationally prohibitive longterm simulations become tractable. The new code will be used to model the proposed Medium-energy Electron-Ion Collider (MEIC) at Jefferson Lab.

HIGH-FIDELITY SIMULATIONS OF LONG-TERM BEAM-BEAM DYNAMICS ON GPUs
Futuremachines such as the Electron Ion Collider (MEIC), linac-ring machines (eRHIC) or LHeC are particularly sensitive to beam-beam effects. This is the limiting factor for long-term stability and high luminosity reach. The complexity of the non-linear dynamics makes it challenging to perform such simulations typically requiring millions of turns. Until recently, most of the methods have invol...
متن کاملPanel Discussion on Beam-beam Simulation Codes∗
I present a brief summary of my remarks made at the Panel Discussion on Beam-Beam Simulations (Session 4A) held at the First CARE-HHH APD Workshop on Beam Dynamics in Future Hadron Colliders and Rapidly Cycling High-Intensity Synchrotrons “HHH 2004” (CERN, 8-11 November, 2004). PRELIMINARY QUESTIONS It does not seem easy, in general, to benchmark beambeam simulations against experiments, whethe...
متن کاملEmittance Dilution Simulations for Normal Conducting and Superconducting Linear Colliders
Abstract An electron (or positron) multi-bunch train traversing several thousand accelerator structures can be distorted by the long-range wakefields left behind accelerated bunches. These wakefields can at the very least, give rise to a dilution in the emittance of the beam and, at worst can lead to a beam break up instability. We investigate the emittance dilution that occurs for various freq...
متن کاملSimulations and Experiments of Beam - Beam Effects in e + e − Storage Rings ∗
Over the past decade, extensive simulations of beam-beam effects in e+e− colliders, based on the particle-in-cell method, were developed to explain many complex experimental observations. Recently, such simulations were used to predict the future luminosity performance of e+e− colliders. Some predictions have been proven to be correct in the existing accelerators. In this paper, many effects su...
متن کاملShielding simulations for safe use of curtain electron accelerator by MCNP4C
In an electron curtain accelerator, when the electron beam passes through the titanium exit window of the accelerator chamber, X-ray photons are produced as a negative by-product of retarding accelerated electrons. Controlling the produced X-ray photons to avoid their detrimental effects or in fact, proper shielding of the accelerator is an important issue that has to be considered in the use o...
